Essentially, all a writer does is choose words from a shared pool of language and tinker with their arrangement. This process is open to everyone, but few seek to do it professionally. For me, it is compelling, rewarding, and endlessly variable. Also, the ability to write well is a versatile skill, another reason I've worked to develop writing expertise. It's taken me many places: to New Orleans where, after I'd just graduated from the University of Michigan, I decided to intern for a local publication. It took me to Bangkok, Thailand, where I had a job rewriting badly translated articles for an English-language newspaper, and to a New York City skyscraper where for several years I was a staff writer for a banking trade magazine. Later, I returned to the Crescent City to earn a Master's of Fine Arts at the University of New Orleans; meanwhile, I also taught writing at the university and later at Tulane's A.B. Freeman business school. I'd frequently done freelance work throughout my writing career, but I decided to take the full-time plunge in January 2004 and shift my focus from journalism to copywriting. Freelancing suits me well, because the diversity of clients and subject matter continually leads me to new places, and personally, I'm more motivated in a home office than in a skyscraper. I'm never at risk of becoming obsolete. While market trends will come and go, the world will always need well-chosen words. Resume available upon request. Materials worked on have received: Gold ADDY Award--Ad Club of New Orleans, 2005 Bronze Adrian Award--Hospitality Sales & Mktg. Assoc. Int'l, 2004 |
